Bomberman was a great game for the SNES and basically sold the Multitap single-handedly. Why? because the fun wasn't in the one-player/two player story game (which could be completed in one very short sitting). It was in the 4-player battle mode where you had to blow everyone else up. Hudsonsoft is now converting this into 3D, 10 player, great graphics... sounds great - I though so. But wait! Won't all that change the fun simplicity of the game?; How will you see behind walls? Will all tactics be lost?; 10 players on one screen? In 3D everyone will have to have a separate box!
Bomberman should arrive in Japan on N64 in 1997. Bomberman 64 may not make an appearance at June's E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in Atlanta, Georgia, because it's still fundamental development stages. A UK version is bound to appear but HudsonSoft could not confirm this. HudsonSoft said there's a possibility that two variations of Bomberman could appear. The sketches and storyboards show both the game as we know it (four-player, with multiplayer and single-player modes), as well as an action-adventure game.
Using N64's built-in four player slots, Bomberman 64 will be multiplayer and there is also a possiblity that a ten-player multitap will be made for the game like the one for the SNES.
Bomberman 64 should keep the high-quality and simplicity of multiplayer Bomberman and HudsonSoft has said it's been very careful to keep the parts people love (cute, simple graphics, and the superb multiplayer mode), while taking advantage of Nintendo 64's graphics technologies. The characters will be rendered in real time, backgrounds will be vibrant and bosses will use much of N64's graphic wizardry. At least three different bosses on the first few levels were said to use several special effects seen only on N64. If HudsonSoft can maintain the same level of quality from previous Bomberman titles the company is sure to have a major hit.
Hopefully they won't change the battle mode much - just better graphics and isometric please. And anyway, making the 1 player game a 3D blast-em-up would probably enhance the gameplay anyway. Please don't mess this one up, Hudsonsoft, Bomberman was fine as it was don't make it all 3D for the sake of it!
